DISASTER RESPONSE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

AMERICAN RED CROSS NEEDS DISASTER RESPONSE VOLUNTEERS

The Shenandoah County Chapter of the American Red Cross is recruiting Disaster Response volunteers for Shenandoah and Page counties. Join the American Red Cross in providing critical relief services when disaster strikes right here in your community or around the nation.  The Red Cross provides on-scene essential aid and comfort to victims of residential fires and responds to local and national disasters.  Volunteers sign up and train for any of several responsibilities: sheltering, feeding, supply distribution, client casework and other vital tasks.  We will teach you the important skills necessary to get your family prepared for disaster and for you to respond to small and large disaster events.

“It is essential that citizens and organizations in Shenandoah and Page Counties be prepared and trained to respond to any disaster situation, whenever or wherever it occurs in the community.  Being a volunteer with the American Red Cross and its disaster response team will “make your day” when your efforts personally help an individual or family recover from a residential/apartment fire, flood, or other type of disaster. Their appreciation will touch your heart,” states Frank Wise, Shenandoah County American Red Cross Chapter’s Disaster Chairman and member of the Board of Directors.

The Disaster Training classes will be held on:

· Tuesday, January 13th, 6pm-8pm, Red Cross office in Woodstock
Fulfilling Our Mission: Translating Your Compassion Into Community Action

NEW DISASTER ACTION TEAM MEMBERS

American Red Cross Welcomes New Disaster Action Team Members

Shenandoah County residents, Dennis Atwood, Shannon Crowley, Jill Darnell, Susan Grabill, Jim Sherry, Toni Spahr, and Fonda Swartz are the newest members of the American Red Cross (ARC) Disaster Action Team (DAT). They join current DAT volunteers, Chanda Barkdoll; Carmen and Don Conard; Tracy Conard; Tom Keveny; Sean Lankard; Bill Vaughn; Frank Wise; and Sharon Baroncelli in being trained and certified to respond to local and regional disasters.

“I worked in emergency preparedness and disaster response at FEMA HQ for 22 years before retiring from the Federal civil service last year. I am pleased to be able now to help clients directly at the field level by being a DAT member,” said Atwood.

“I believe that it is important that we help when we can and I am proud to be a member of this team,” explained Crowley.

“The community should be very happy to know there are citizens trained as DAT members.  The entire preparedness process is being trained and ready to respond and that is what DAT is all about,” explained Gary Yew, Shenandoah County’s Fire Chief.

“The ARC of Shenandoah County is extremely pleased that these citizens have completed Disaster Action Team training that will enable them to join other team members in responding to local disasters to provide immediate emergency assistance to those who have lost their homes to fire or other types of disasters.  Our Red Cross Chapter is steadily improving its capacity to respond to local disasters and these wonderful volunteers will greatly enhance that,” stated Frank Wise, Disaster Chair and member of the Chapter’s Board of Directors.

DAT members respond to natural and man-made disasters to single and/or multi-family residences, such as a fire or flooding. The Red Cross DAT is not self-dispatched during an incident but called in by Yew, Fire Marshall David Ferguson, or the Incident Commander on-site to assist those displaced from their homes.

The Red Cross DAT member upon arriving at the incident and assessing the needs of those displaced will provide lodging for up to three days; and funding for food, clothing, medications, and other necessities lost during the disaster. They offer comfort and compassion during a very highly stressed and emotionally charged situation.

DAT members receive a full day's training in the Mission of the Red Cross, Shelter Operations and Mass Care. Additionally, they learn to do client response and casework and then spend time shadowing an experienced DAT member at disaster incidents.

If you are interested in volunteering for the Red Cross as a shelter worker or DAT member, contact the Chapter’s Executive Director, Sharon Baroncelli, or one of the new DAT members.
