American Red Cross Thanks Volunteers and Businesses for Support During I-81 Disaster The Shenandoah County Chapter of the American Red Cross was called on Tuesday at 12:45a.m. to open a shelter for the evacuees from the I-81 multi-vehicle disaster. Because a HazMat spill was involved, evacuees were from vehicles and a nearby house. Within 30 minutes of that first call from Fire Marshall David Ferguson the Woodstock Fire Department volunteers and four members from its Auxiliary, along with 12 Red Cross disaster volunteers responded to the scene. Red Cross and Fire Department volunteers retrieved cots, blankets, pillows and supplies from the Red Cross office and set up on the second floor in the Fire Department. The feeding crew went to work setting up coffee and food stations for the evacuees and first responders. Volunteers began calling local businesses for support and supplies that could be donated quickly for this emergency situation. The Red Cross would like to recognize and thank those businesses that made such an impact during this disaster. We are grateful for your support and we couldn’t have done it without you: Wal-Mart, Sheetz Team in Woodstock, Food Lions in Woodstock and Strasburg, McDonald’s in Strasburg, Denny’s in Mt. Jackson and Strasburg, Domino’s and Shaffer’s BBQ. In addition, we are especially grateful for the volunteers who responded without hesitation and stayed until the shelter was closed. We sheltered and fed 46 evacuees and close to 200 first responders throughout the 16 hour ordeal. Red Cross Disaster Volunteers were: Sharon Baroncelli, Jim and Maryann Sherry, Jack Turley, Pastors Lisa and Randy Webb, Jill Darnell, Chanda Barkdoll, Tom Keveny, Sherry Yeakle, Teresa Cutlip, Fabiana French, Brian and Pat Krueger, Bob and Mari Rippey, Carmen and Don Conard, and Tracy and Jon Conard. Woodstock Fire Department Auxiliary members were: Connie Funkhouser, Cena Simmons, Rebekah Day, Alma Hottle, Debbie Funkhouser, Arlene Hamman, and Kim Miller. We would also like to thank Woodstock Fire Chief Wayne Bowers, and Shenandoah County Fire & Rescue Firefighter/EMT’s Kenny Monkman and Courtney Yeatts who offered assistance, medical care, and support at the shelter throughout the day. According to our volunteers, the reward for their work is the satisfaction of helping others during a critical time.“It’s so gratifying to know I made a difference and was there to help in someone’s time of need,” commented one Red Crosser when expressing that volunteering during this disaster has changed her life. We want to Celebrate our wonderful volunteers and there is no better time than this week, during National Volunteer Week! The Shenandoah County Chapter's RV was on the scene throughout the ordeal providing food and drink to first responders. |
