American Red Cross Thanks Volunteers and Businesses for Support During I-81 Disaster

The Shenandoah County Chapter of the American Red Cross was called on Tuesday at 12:45a.m. to open a shelter for the evacuees from the I-81 multi-vehicle disaster.  Because a HazMat spill was involved, evacuees were from vehicles and a nearby house.  Within 30 minutes of that first call from Fire Marshall David Ferguson the Woodstock Fire Department volunteers and four members from its Auxiliary, along with 12 Red Cross disaster volunteers responded to the scene.

Red Cross and Fire Department volunteers retrieved cots, blankets, pillows and supplies from the Red Cross office and set up on the second floor in the Fire Department.  The feeding crew went to work setting up coffee and food stations for the evacuees and first responders. Volunteers began calling local businesses for support and supplies that could be donated quickly for this emergency situation.

The Red Cross would like to recognize and thank those businesses that made such an impact during this disaster. We are grateful for your support and we couldn’t have done it without you:
Wal-Mart, Sheetz Team in Woodstock, Food Lions in Woodstock and Strasburg, McDonald’s in Strasburg, Denny’s in Mt. Jackson and Strasburg, Domino’s and Shaffer’s BBQ.

In addition, we are especially grateful for the volunteers who responded without hesitation and stayed until the shelter was closed. We sheltered and fed 46 evacuees and close to 200 first responders throughout the 16 hour ordeal.

Red Cross Disaster Volunteers were: Sharon Baroncelli, Jim and Maryann Sherry, Jack Turley, Pastors Lisa and Randy Webb, Jill Darnell, Chanda Barkdoll, Tom Keveny, Sherry Yeakle, Teresa Cutlip, Fabiana French, Brian and Pat Krueger, Bob and Mari Rippey, Carmen and Don Conard, and Tracy and Jon Conard

Woodstock Fire Department Auxiliary members were: Connie Funkhouser, Cena Simmons, Rebekah Day, Alma Hottle, Debbie Funkhouser, Arlene Hamman, and Kim Miller.

We would also like to thank Woodstock Fire Chief Wayne Bowers, and Shenandoah County Fire & Rescue Firefighter/EMT’s Kenny Monkman and Courtney Yeatts who offered assistance, medical care, and support at the shelter throughout the day.

According to our volunteers, the reward for their work is the satisfaction of helping others during a critical time.“It’s so gratifying to know I made a difference and was there to help in someone’s time of need,” commented one Red Crosser when expressing that volunteering during this disaster has changed her life.

We want to Celebrate our wonderful volunteers and there is no better time than this week, during National Volunteer Week!

The Shenandoah County Chapter's RV was on the scene throughout the ordeal providing food and drink to first responders.

Red Cross Provides Care and Comfort to Recent Fire Victims

Thanks to you the American Red Cross Shenandoah County Chapter continues to care for the families displaced by the recent fires in Mt. Jackson and Page County.  Your support and donations will allow us to continue providing assistance to families displaced by fires. The Chapter's Disaster Action Team (DAT) members responded quickly to each fire scene. The Chapter provided financial assistance for shelter, food and clothes to the affected families, as well as referral assistance for other needs.

Since mid-November, the Shenandoah County Chapter has responded with financial assistance to 21 disasters and four Armed Forces emergencies, serving 74 people (which includes 25 children). No area of the county has been immune from fire damage. The Red Cross assisted at house fires in Mt. Jackson, Quicksburg, Edinburg, Basye, Woodstock, and Strasburg. In Page County we were on the scene at fires in Luray, Stanley, and Elkton. Thus far this year, we have spent approximately $19,000 from our disaster budget to provide emergency food, clothing, medications, and shelter to affected families.

According to Chapter Executive Director Sharon Baroncelli, “I don't know what the families that have been faced with these horrible disasters would have done without the immediate support from our Red Cross Chapter. That support is only made possible because of volunteers and donations from our community. Those disaster relief funds provide immediate and emergency financial assistance to the families who have lost their homes or faced with a crisis. Red Cross caseworkers are also working one-on-one with all the displaced residents to address their specific needs, including offering emotional care and helping with longer-term recovery plans.”

Baroncelli added, “I sincerely hope we’ve seen the last of these incidents, but if not, the Red Cross will continue to be there for anyone else who needs our help.”

The American Red Cross Shenandoah County Chapter provides relief to victims of disasters and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Last year, the Chapter responded to 13 disasters. The Red Cross is not a government agency. All Red Cross disaster assistance is free of charge and made possible thanks to the generosity of people in our county who donate their time, money and blood.

Our Chapter is currently facing an emergency need for financial assistance for disaster preparedness and relief efforts. Donations to our Chapter’s disaster relief efforts can be made by calling 540-459-2913.
