American Red Cross Seeks Local HeroesDo You Know A Real Hero?The Shenandoah County Chapter of the American Red Cross, serving Shenandoah and Page Counties would like to bring attention to heroes in our community who have saved lives, committed selfless acts of courage and compassion and exemplify the mission and qualities of the Red Cross movement. The Heroes Reception on March 31, 2010, honors local people for acts of great bravery, dedication and service to the community. Hero categories are listed below. Nominations are due Wednesday, March 5, 2010. Adult Good Samaritan - Sponsored by Shentel An individual(s) who courageously and selflessly responded to an unusual, significant or unexpected crisis. Community Impact - Sponsored by Holtzman Oil/Holtzman Propane An individual(s) who showed concern and worked to improve the safety and well-being of his/her community. Disaster Relief - Sponsored by Shenandoah Valley Electric Cooperative, Inc. An individual(s) who exhibited heroic efforts in response to a natural disaster or emergency situation, providing relief to victims. Firefighter A career or volunteer firefighter(s) who acted above and beyond the call of duty, exhibiting either in response to an emergency situation or through an ongoing commitment to the community. EMT A career or volunteer EMT(s) who acted above and beyond the call of duty while providing patient care or through an ongoing commitment to the community. Law Enforcement A professional police officer(s) or related law enforcement official(s) who acted above and beyond the call of duty, exhibiting heroism either in response to an emergency situation or through an ongoing commitment to the community. Nurse - Sponsored by Shenandoah Memorial Hospital/Valley Health A licensed and practicing nurse, nursing student, or retired nurse who exhibited heroism either in their response to an emergency situation or through an ongoing commitment to the community. Youth Good Samaritan An individual(s), under the age of 21, who courageously and selflessly responded to an unusual, significant or unexpected crisis. Military - Sponsored by Buettner Tire Distributors Presented to a member of the armed forces (active or retired, commissioned or non-commissioned) whose lifesaving action goes above and beyond the call of duty. The 2009 Heroes honored were: Adult Good Samaritan: Pastor Rodney Lebron The 2009 Heroes Reception was held at Fort Valley Nursery in Woodstock. The Heroes Reception was generously presented by Shentel and sponsored by Holtzman Oil/Holtzman Propane, DuPont Community Credit Union, Valley Health/Shenandoah Memorial Hospital and Cross Roads Catering. Proceeds from this event will benefit our disaster relief efforts in Shenandoah County.
