Red Cross Launches New Wilderness and Remote First Aid Course Shenandoah County Chapter's Wilderness and Remote First Aid Program in the Northern Shenandoah Valley Area The American Red Cross Shenandoah County Chapter recently completed its training of its new Wilderness and Remote First Aid course, which is designed for scouts, outdoor enthusiasts and people who work in remote wilderness environments. The Wilderness and Remote First Aid course fills a real need in our community, especially within the Shenandoah National Park and George Washington National Forest. We all know immediate care can help save lives and prevent serious injuries; and this course provides a great way to help protect people who spend time outdoors for work or play. The Chapter partnered with Shenandoah County Parks & Recreation and Blue Canoe Crew to sponsor the first course which was held on June 12 and 13, 2010 at the County Park. The 16-hour Wilderness and Remote First Aid course gave people the skills needed to respond to an emergency when help may be delayed. The course includes training on: • Head (Brain), Neck and Spinal Injuries • Heat-Related Emergencies • Hypothermia • Altitude-Related Illnesses • Allergies and Anaphylaxis • Burns • Bone and Joint Injuries • Wounds and Wound Infection The course also offered enhanced content and topics to meet OSHA’s Best Practices for Workplace First Aid Training Programs—particularly important for occupational environments that are impacted by federal regulations. The course is based on the Boy Scouts of America Wilderness First Aid Curriculum and Doctrine Guidelines and has been reviewed and/or supported by the American Camp Association, American Canoe Association, National Recreation and Park Association, and JCC Association. The Wilderness and Remote First Aid course offers flexibility for organizations and their instructors to adapt the course to varying environments. Plus, major portions of the course are designed to be taught outdoors to ensure participants are prepared to respond in those settings. Course participants must be at least 14 years of age and possess current certification in adult CPR/AED. To find out how you can participate in Wilderness and Remote First Aid training, contact the Shenandoah County Chapter at 540-459-2913 or visit shenandoahredcross.org for more information. Thank You Shenandoah Elementary
Students at Shenandoah Elementary School sold paper hearts over the past month to raise funds for Haiti’s disaster relief efforts. Student representatives (L –R) Morgan Treger, Bailey Dallas, and Sydney Thayer were very pleased to present a $1,000 check for Haiti to Sharon Baroncelli, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Shenandoah County Chapter that serves Page County. “I’m so impressed that a school with 300 students was able to raise such a large amount for the families in Haiti who lost everything in the devastating January 12th earthquake. I’m so proud of all the students and very thankful for their dedication to this project. Thank you Shenandoah Elementary School students, parents, faculty and staff”, said Baroncelli. |
